A lack of scope control in technology projects is a key reason for cost blowouts, says Brennan’s Founder and Managing Director, Dave Stevens.

This issue is particularly prevalent in the mid-market, he says, where poor discipline around project scoping can inflate costs. This comes at a time when ADAPT’s data identifies inadequate funding for tech and cyber initiatives as the number one barrier for organisations.

“It’s [about] customers having the discipline…to well document the [project’s] scope in the first instance, having dug into all the different features and functions that they want, and business outcomes, and then having the discipline to not start just adding features and functions as they go,” he says.

Stevens tells ADAPT that this problem is less common in large enterprises and government sectors.
