Strategic Business Initiatives Market Trend Reports What’s in store for enterprise IT in 2024 and beyond? by Byron Connolly and Matt Boon Mar 8, 2024 | 24 mins

In 2023, ADAPT hosted and surveyed 3,000 business and tech leaders responsible for over 60% of our gross domestic product (GDP). It’s clear from the conversations we had with these executives that various challenges are holding them back from achieving the technology-fuelled productivity and efficiency increases that they need to stay competitive.

Through our unique analysis of Australia’s leading enterprise and government organisations, ADAPT has found several consistent root cause issues and common barriers to success.

This report shows 5 of these critical areas. It uncovers what the top performers are doing to reach higher profits and realise value, efficiencies and growth.

2024 is shaping up to be the year that the hype around generative AI starts to dissipate and these tools will be tested and deployed more widely across Australian organisations. In February, ADAPT asked 181 CIOs to indicate the top outcomes they expect to deliver in 2024. Creating an AI strategy and roadmap was number 7 on the list.

But before we can operationalise emerging technology, we need to get our house in order. Many CIOs are still grappling with modernising ageing tech platforms. In 2020, ADAPT surveyed 507 CFOs and tech C-suite execs with 31% indicating that legacy technologies were a barrier to the successful delivery of technology projects.

In 2023, more than half (56%) of the 832 executives in these same groups said they were being hindered by ageing infrastructure.

Last year, tech and cyber execs defended against cyber threats following high-profile attacks in Australia. CEOs and boards are now on the hook when these events occur and are more willing than ever to dedicate resources to the problem.

Australian enterprises also strengthened their digital cultures. This is vital if organisations want to build a strong culture of innovation that is driven from the top. However, there’s a long way to go; ADAPT’s research has found, on average, only 45% of CIOs consider their boards and leadership teams digitally savvy.

Here are the 5 key areas that ADAPT recommends CIOs and technology leaders should focus on in 2024 and beyond.
