Australian organisations are increasingly adopting AI, with 96% either planning or deploying AI solutions. However, a significant maturity gap exists in security practices, leaving organisations struggling to align rapid AI adoption with robust security. Strong correlations between cyber resilience, security maturity, and AI readiness highlight the need for better security controls to ensure AI success.

Core Insights:

AI adoption status and security maturity

  • 24% of organisations are actively deploying AI, while 72% are in the planning or piloting phase, indicating a strong interest in AI but a gap in full deployment.
  • Organisations with mature security practices are 4.4x more likely to successfully deploy AI, demonstrating the direct link between security maturity and AI readiness.

Risk assessment and management

  • External developers are considered the highest risk (45%), with growing concerns about human oversight and open-source library vulnerabilities (39% report severe risks).
  • The focus on testing, validation, and reducing external developer risks is increasing, reflecting a shift from theoretical to practical security challenges as AI adoption progresses.

CISO influence on AI strategy

  • CISOs in AI-deploying organisations play a more strategic role (61%) compared to those actively discouraging AI, where CISO influence is 3.6x weaker.
  • The correlation between CISO influence and AI success is strong, with organisations having mature security and strong CISO influence showing higher AI deployment success and strategic alignment.
